9. APPROVAL OF 2009-2010 ELEMENTARY FEES
Description
In accordance with School Board Rule 5.39, Before and After School Care, fees must be approved yearly at a School Board meeting prior to the end of the school year.

Recommendation
That the elementary fees be approved as presented.  This schedule reflects a $1.00 per day increase to cover district utility costs.

10. AMENDMENT TO FINANCIAL CONTRACT BETWEEN A TO Z IN HOME TUTORING LLC AND THE SCHOOL BOARD OF SARASOTA COUNTY
Description
To increase the amount of contract # 00090232 by $25,000.00, since this Title I SES provider has received more parent requests for services than was anticipated at the time of the original contract.

Recommendation
That the School Board of Sarasota County approve the increase to the financial contract with A to Z In Home Tutoring LLC as presented.

FIELD TRIPS

23. APPROVAL OF THE NORTH PORT HIGH SCHOOL BAND FIELD TRIP TO GATLINBURG, TENNESSEE, ON MAY 6, 2009 THROUGH MAY 10, 2009
Description
This trip will enable students to participate in an adjudicated and evaluative music festival.  Students will gain valuable feedback on their performance, which will help the Band program at NPHS grow and prosper.

Recommendation
That the North Port High School Band field trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, on May 6, 2009 through May 10, 2009, be approved.

24. APPROVAL OF THE SARASOTA HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM FIELD TRIP TO LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY, ON MAY 1, 2009 THROUGH MAY 5, 2009
Description

This is a competitive Speech and Debate team which competes in ten separate events at each tournament.  It is connected directly to the Speech and Debate courses offered at Sarasota High School as well as the National Forensic League, National Catholic Forensic League, and the Florida Forensic League. 



Recommendation

That the Sarasota High School Speech and Debate team field trip to Lexington, Kentucky, on May 1, 2009 through May 5, 2009, be approved.



25. APPROVAL OF THE SARASOTA HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPER AND YEARBOOK FIELD TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, ON APRIL 24, 2009 THROUGH APRIL 27, 2009
Description
Members of the Sarasota High School newspaper and yearbook staff will visit New York City, New York, the media capital of the world, to tour the network studios (NBC, ABC, CNN) as well as visit Columbia University, one of the most prestigious journalism/communications schools in the Ivy league.  Students will also see a Broadway play, experience the "Big Apple" and become immersed in the cultural experiences the city has to offer.

Recommendation

That the Sarasota High School newspaper and yearbook staff field trip to New York City, New York, on April 24, 2009 through April 27, 2009, be approved.



26. APPROVAL OF THE SARASOTA HIGH SCHOOL SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM FIELD TRIP TO ALBANY, NEW YORK, ON MAY 22, 2009 THROUGH MAY 25, 2009
Description

27. APPROVAL OF THE SARASOTA HIGH SCHOOL TWELFTH GRADE MRI/RESEARCH FIELD TRIP TO RENO, NEVADA, ON MAY 10, 2009 THROUGH MAY 15, 2009
Description
Students will attend the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair as representatives of Sarasota County to present and defend their research.  This is the ultimate final activity for students completing four years of research at Sarasota High School.

Recommendation
That the Sarasota High School twelfth grade MRI/Research field trip to Reno, Nevada on May 10, 2009 through May 15, 2009, be approved.

28. APPROVAL OF PINE VIEW SCHOOL'S SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM FIELD TRIP TO ALBANY, NEW YORK, ON MAY 22, 2009 THROUGH MAY 25, 2009
Description
Students of Speech I and Debate II classes compete in district, state and national speech and debate contests.  Students earn membership privileges in the Catholic Forensic League, Florida Forensic League and National  Forensic League.

Recommendation
That the Pine View School's Speech and Debate team field trip to Albany, New York, on May 22, 2009 through May 25, 2009, be approved.

29. APPROVAL OF PINE VIEW SCHOOL'S ENGINEERING CLUB BATTLEBOTS COMPETITION FIELD TRIP TO SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ON APRIL 22, 2009 THROUGH APRIL 28, 2009
Description
This is an annual competition in which students design and fabricate battlebots.  Students compete with other students from various schools throughout the country.  The competition is televised.

Recommendation
That the Pine View School's Engineering Club Battlebot Competition field trip to San Francisco, California, on April 22, 2009 through April 28, 2009, be approved.

30. APPROVAL OF THE RIVERVIEW HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR FIELD TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK, ON APRIL 9, 2009 THROUGH APRIL 13, 2009
Description

Students will have the opportunity to perform two major works with full orchestra at Carnegie Hall in New York City.  The conductor of the works is well known and respected choral composer and conductor, Sir John Rutter.  The students will have an opportunity to collaborate with six other groups from around the country and work to perform a concert with three rehearsals.  The repertoire selected for this performance includes a contemporary setting of the traditional "Gloria" text composed by John Rutter and a second "Gloria" originally composed by Claudio Monteverdi, the famed Baroque composer.



Recommendation
That the Riverview High School Choir field trip to New York City, New York, on April 9, 2009 through April 13, 2009, be approved.

EXPULSIONS

31. APPROVAL OF EXPULSION CASE NO. 09-280
Description

The student listed in Expulsion Case No. 09-280 violated School Board Policy 5.322, Prohibition Against Use, Sale, or Possession of Alcohol or Drugs.  It is the recommendation of the Superintendent that the student be expelled from the Sarasota County Schools until January 20, 2010, of the 2009-2010 academic year.



Recommendation

That in accordance with provisions of Sections 1006.07 (1)(a)(b), Florida Statutes and School Board Policy 5.34, and the holding of a hearing having been waived by the student/parent, the recommendation as specified in Expulsion Case No. 09-280 to expel the student referenced therein from the Sarasota County Schools be approved effective immediately for the remainder of the 2008-2009 academic year, the 2009 summer session, until January 20 of the 2009-2010 academic year.

32. APPROVAL OF EXPULSION CASE NO. 09-299
Description

The student listed in Expulsion Case No. 09-299 violated School Board Policy 5.32, Zero Tolerance (1)(i), Possession, Use, or Sale of Controlled Substances.  It is the recommendation of the Superintendent that the student be expelled from the Sarasota County Schools until June 4, 2010.



Recommendation

That in accordance with provisions of Sections 1006.07 (1)(a)(b), Florida Statutes and School Board Policy 5.34, and the holding of a hearing having been waived by the student/parent, the recommendation as specified in Expulsion Case No. 09-299 to expel the student referenced therein from the Sarasota County Schools be approved effective immediately for the remainder of the 2008-2009 academic year, the 2009 summer session, and the entire 2009-2010 academic year.

Description

The student listed in Expulsion Case No. 09-308 violated School Board Policy 5.34 (1)(d), Extortion/Intimidation.  It is the recommendation of the Superintendent that the student be expelled from the Sarasota County Schools until June 4, 2010.

Description

The student listed in Expulsion Case No. 08-342 is in violation of an accepted Expulsion Settlement Agreement for alternative school placement.  On October 28, 2008, the student listed in Expulsion Case No. 08-342 violated School Board Policy 5.34 (i)(d), Theft.  It is the recommendation of the Superintendent that the student be expelled from the Sarasota County Schools until January 15, 2010.



Recommendation

That in accordance with provisions of Sections 1006.07 (1)(a)(b), Florida Statutes and School Board Policy 5.34, and the holding of a hearing having been waived by the student/parent, the recommendation as specified in Expulsion Case No. 08-342 to expel the student referenced therein from the Sarasota County Schools be approved effective immediately for the remainder of the 2008-2009 academic year, the 2009 summer session, until January 15 of the 2009-2010 academic year.

35. APPROVAL TO RESCIND EXPULSION ABEYANCE CASE NO. 08-354
Description

That the abeyance of Expulsion Case No. 99-044 be rescinded per School Board Rule 7.306(4).



Recommendation
School Board Policy 5.34(4) permits the Board to hold in abeyance the expulsion of a student if the student participates in a recognized alternative-to-expulsion program.  This student did not enroll in the alternative program and his expulsion is reinstated.

Description

39. APPROVAL TO REJECT BID #9015 FOR HARV MATERIALS
Description

Bids to provide 'Harv Materials' were received from two vendors on March 3, 2009.  It is requested that all bids be rejected since no bids were received for Trane or Dunham Bush parts.  The bid will be re-issued at a later date.

40. APPROVAL TO AWARD BID #9034 FOR PETROLEUM PRODUCTS
Description

Bids to provide 'Petroleum Products' were received from four vendors on March 3, 2009.  The bid of Palmdale Oil Company, Inc., was the best low bid meeting the advertised specifications.  Reasons for not selecting the apparent low bid are included with the bid tabulation.  This bid is for a period of one year with the option to renew for two additional one-year periods.  The funds for these purchases are contained in the operating budget allocated to the Transportation Department.      

 



Recommendation

That the bid of Palmdale Oil Company, Inc., to provide 'Petroleum Products' in an amount not to exceed $75,000.00, be approved for award and purchase.

Description
Bids to provide 'Office and Classroom Supplies - Warehouse' were received from 12 vendors on February 10, 2009.  The bids of AFP Industries, Inc., Apex Office Products, Inc., Business Stationers, Grainger, National Art & School Supplies, Pyramid School Products, School Specialty, Smith Office and Computer Supply, and Standard Stationery Supply Company were the best low bids meeting the advertised specifications.  Reasons for not selecting the apparent low bid are included with the bid tabulation.  This bid is for a period of one year with the option to renew for two additional one-year periods.  The items will be requisitioned from the Purchasing Warehouse by all schools and departments.  Funds for these purchases are contained in the operating budgets allocated to the individual cost centers.

Recommendation
That the bids of AFP Industries, Inc., Apex Office Products, Inc., Business Stationers, Grainger, National Art & School Supplies, Pyramid School Products, School Specialty, Smith Office and Computer Supply, and Standard Stationery Supply Company, at the unit prices in the enclosure in an amount not to exceed $300,000.00, be approved for award and purchase.

CONSTRUCTION

42. ACCEPTANCE OF SUBSTANTIAL COMPLETION FOR THE SARASOTA HIGH SCHOOL - BUILDINGS #1, #13 & #14 HVAC COMMISSIONING PROJECT
Description
The project manager has prepared the Certificate of Substantial Completion and the final punch list.  The project is substantially complete in accordance with the contract documents.  A copy of the final punch list is available for review at the Construction Services Department.

Recommendation
That the work performed by Willis A. Smith Construction, Inc. for the Sarasota High School - Buildings #1, #13 & #14 HVAC Commissioning project be accepted as substantially complete as of 2/12/2009.
